New Journal Article: The First Latin Translation of the Qur'an
I have a new academic journal article out for the Journal of Islamic Sciences on the first complete Western translation of the Qur'an: namely, the Latin translation completed in 1143 by Englishman Robert of Ketton, as part of a project financed by Peter the Venerable. Drawing on the primary sources and partly responding to the latest scholarship, I address the historical context behind the production of the translation, the translator's general paraphrase approach, how he translates the term Islam, and whether the translator can be seen as guilty of 'distortion'. I also provide renderings of his translations of the last 17 chapters of the Qur'an.
