I would like to draw readers’ attention to my new study co-authored with Charlie Winter and published by the Hudson Institute’s Current Trends in Islamist Ideology. The study is an in-depth exploration of the Islamic State in the southern Syrian province of Deraa, examining both its history and the present situation.
The study is of relevance in light of the reports that the Islamic State’s last leader- Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi- was killed there in mid-October of last year. We revisit the history of the group’s evolution in the province over the past decade or so, and also help conceptualise the group’s self-reported claims of operations (which are very likely to be a deliberate undercount of its attacks in the region).
You can access the new study here.

the Ikhwan association sparked my curiosity. Also congratulations for the article in Hudson's Current Trends, very valuable perspective on what's happening in Syria.
