The Muslim Brotherhood in Syria was the leading face of the insurgency against the Assad regime in the 1970s and 1980s, but during the war that eventually brought down the regime it never proved to be the leading face of the insurgency, though there were some groups that were seen in particular as linked to the Brotherhood in Syria (e.g. Faylaq al-Sham) or had Brotherhood elements in them. Instead, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, which was foundationally a Salafi group, spearheaded the overthrow of the regime.
