Statement from Akhtarin Local Council on Alleged Camps to Resettle Gazans
Translation and Overview
As Israel’s war in Gaza has increasingly dragged out, Israeli political discourse has increasingly touted ideas of ‘resettlement’ and ‘migration’ of Gazans to other countries. These notions are not only disconnected from reality, but should also be understood as reflecting how a desire to bring about the ethnic cleansing of Gaza has gained increasing currency in Israel, however euphemistically one might frame the concept.
Concomitant with this trend is a tendency among some Israeli analysts and journalists to leap upon any story that might suggest willingness or readiness on the part of some party to accept displaced Gazans. In recent days in Syria I heard some rumours (originating from social media) about the preparation of some camps in north Aleppo countryside to host displaced Gazans. The circulation of these rumours was then picked up via Israel channel I24 news journalist Ariel Oseran, who touted the circulation of these rumours as a ‘scoop’ from his ‘Syrian sources.’
