New Book: The Mozarabic Chronicle in Arabic Translation

I am pleased to announce that my Arabic translation and study of the Mozarabic Chronicle/Chronicle of 754 has been recently published by Dar Dalmun al-Jadida in Damascus, Syria. Planning for production of the book began prior to the fall of the Assad regime, after approval for publication had been obtained from the Ministry for Information (back in the days of the Assad regime, every book had to receive government approval for publication). However, the regime’s rapid collapse and uncertainty about Syria’s situation meant that the planned publication was suspended. As it became clear however that the new administration is here to stay, the book went ahead for publication.

The Mozarabic Chronicle is a very important document for those interested in the history of Muslim Spain. Written in Latin and likely composed by an Iberian Christian living under Muslim rule in Spain, the Mozarabic Chronicle is the first surviving written source documenting the Muslim conquest of Spain (711 CE) and its initial aftermath. As its other common title (Chronicle of 754) suggests, the work goes up to the year 754 CE. In contrast, the earliest surviving Arabic sources documenting the conquest and its aftermath do not emerge until the ninth century CE, beginning with the works of Ibn Abd al-Hakam and Abd al-Malik bin Habib. As such, the Mozarabic Chronicle is an indispensable comparative source to use alongside the Arabic sources.
