Since the beginning of Israel’s incursion into southern Syria following the fall of the Assad regime, the new Syrian government under Ahmad al-Sharaa (Abu Muhammad al-Jowlani) has adopted a consistent approach of caution and de-escalation, condemning the Israeli incursion and its military actions that have killed locals but avoiding a military confrontation out of concern that a conflict with Israel will jeopardise its position on account of the mismatch in military capabilities. Put simply, the non-confrontational approach of the new Syrian government is a matter of pragmatism.
Predictably, however, the Islamic State has taken note of this non-confrontational approach and is using it to attack the new Syrian government in this new editorial published in the group’s weekly newsletter al-Naba’.
