Since the start of the Israel-Gaza War on 7 October last year, the Houthi movement (“Ansar Allah”- “Partisans of God”), which controls much of Yemen’s northwest as part of the country’s ongoing civil war, has come to much greater global prominence: specifically because of the group’s targeting of shipping in the Red Sea and its attempted attacks on Israel as part of an effort of showing support for Hamas and Gaza.
With this greater prominence has come a wave of what I call ‘Houthi Fetishism.’ The phenomenon, primarily observed among leftists who have lived in Western countries, takes various forms.
