The 30 September marked the official withdrawal of U.S.-led coalition forces from Iraq, bringing an end to a counter-Islamic State mission that lasted for more than a decade. Islamic State insurgent activity against Iraqi government has for some time been at historically low levels. Indeed, for a number of years the group’s activities in Iraq have been at very low intensity.
However, an uptick in the number of officially claimed attacks has been observed in the build-up to the withdrawal in September and in the immediate aftermath.
