About My Village (Article in Western Neo-Aramaic)

Not too long ago, I bought a house in the Celtiberia region of Spain. It is located in a very nice and peaceful village that was recently featured in local media among the “prettiest towns of Castile La Mancha.” In honour of this distinction and out of love for my village, I present a brief overview of my village written in Western Neo-Aramaic (specifically, the dialect of the village of Bakh‘a, which is unfortunately the dialect most at risk of extinction now) with translations in English, Arabic and Spanish. I also include some photos of the village and its surroundings.

No hace mucho tiempo, compré una casa en la región de Celtiberia de España. Está ubicada en un pueblo muy bonito y pacífico que apareció en los medios locales como uno de los “pueblos más bonitos de Castilla-La Mancha.” En honor de esta distinción y por amor a mi pueblo, presento esta breve descripción de mi pueblo escrita en la lengua aramea occidental moderna (en concreto, el dialecto del pueblo de Bakh‘a que es desafortunadamente el dialecto que tiene más riesgo de extinción ahora) con traducciones en inglés y árabe y español. Incluyo también algunas fotos del pueblo y sus alrededores.

The village’s name is Tortuera and it is located in the north of Spain and to the south of the town called Zaragoza to be specific. The village’s roots go back to the 16th century AD and we have an old church as well as an old water-spring. Its inhabitants currently number around 180 people, though in the past our village was bigger. In the summer the number of people normally grows as some people flee from the heat in the cities and the coastal areas and come here in view of the nice climate and the village’s elevation, as the village is around 1000 m above sea-level. Most of the people of the village work in agriculture and rearing livestock, only speak Spanish and love life in their village. The village is devoid of light pollution and you can see many stars and the Milky Way at night in the sky. The people of the village love Syrians and Iraqis, and they say that the village is among the most beautiful villages in the region.

اسم القرية هي تورتويرا وتقع في الريف الشمالي باسبانيا والى جنوب مدينة سراقسطة على وجه التحديد. تعود جذور القرية الى القرن السادس عشر الميلادي ولدينا كنيسة قديمة بالاضافة الى عين ماء قديمة. وعدد السكان حوالي ١٨٠ نسمة حاليا بيد ان القرية كانت اكبر في الماضي، وعادةً يزداد عدد السكان في الصيف حيث يهرب بعض الناس من الحر في المدن والمناطق الساحلية ويأتون الى هنا نظراً للمناخ الطيب وارتفاع القرية بما ان القرية ترتفع فوق مستوى البحر ب١٠٠٠ متر تقريباً. يعمل معظم الاهالي في الزراعة وتربية المواشي ويتكلمون اللغة الاسبانية فقط ويحبون الحياة في قريتهم. القرية خالية من التلوث الضوئي وبامكانك ان ترى كثرة النجوم بالليل ودرب التبانة. يحب أهالي القرية السوريين والعراقيين، ويقولون ان القرية من اجمل القرى في المنطقة.

El pueblo se llama Tortuera y está ubicado en el campo del norte de España y situado al sur de la ciudad de Zaragoza en concreto. Las raíces del pueblo se remontan al siglo dieciséis d.C. y tenemos una iglesia antigua y una antigua fuente de agua. Y actualmente el número de los habitantes es 180 personas aproximadamente, aunque el pueblo era más grande en el pasado. Normalmente aumenta el número de los habitantes en el verano porque huyen algunas personas del calor en las ciudades y las regiones marítimas y vienen aquí debido al bonito clima y la altura del pueblo, porque el pueblo se encuentra a una altura de más de mil metros sobre el nivel del mar. La mayoría de la gente trabaja en la agricultura y la ganadería y habla español solamente y le gusta la vida en su pueblo. El pueblo se halla libre de la contaminación lumínica y se pueden ver muchas estrellas y la vía láctea por la noche. A la gente del pueblo le gustan los sirios y los iraquíes, y dicen que el pueblo es uno de los pueblos más bonitos de la región.
